Jean Okada's profile

São Luís em bico de pena

This was a project I illustrated for independent writer Yves Ladvocat Cintra about buildings and places in São Luís, Maranhão. All the illustrations were done in digital art imitating the texture of a quill pen, based on photographs taken by the author during his travels.

The brief asked me to eliminate images of people and vehicles from the street, showing only buildings and places. In several cases I searched for other images on the internet and had help from Google Maps to complete the drawing of building facades and various details of some locations.
This is an example of a page where we've intervened more in the landscape. The author wanted to show as much of the old buildings as possible, which were covered by the trees. We made a first version of the drawing, reducing the tree canopy and, in the end, we decided to remove all of them, leaving only the buildings.
Cover studies through to the final product. At first we thought of using a white background, already showing how the book's internal illustrations are in black and white, and some graphic elements that would refer to the flag of the city of São Luís. But in the end we decided to take a different route.
